EMPIRE 109
TRIANGLE
Shockwaves
(2014, Cocoon Concepts)
In the beginning of 2014 the album „spaceship cocoon“ by the Cocoon project has been released: The man behind this project is the Australian musician Tony Tralongo. The music presented on this album was clearly Krautrock inspired. But Tralongo is a very versatile musician, he is not only working on his Cocoon project, but also releasing his first album „shockwaves“ with his band Triangle. Although there are also hints of Krautrock, this differs from the music of Cocoon. Tralongo plays keyboards and guitars. The trio is completed by Emilio Sarra (bass, keyboards, guitars) and Ben Parrisi (keyboards, guitars, drums, percussion). Sounds like guitar-oriented stuff, but it isn’t. Already the first minutes of the opener show what to expect. Chimes, church organ, spoken words (Parrisi) – that is in parts dark, a bit like a soundtrack, reminding of the Italian bands Jacula or Antonius Rex. Nut until the third track the guitar is appearing in a dominant role. The church organ theme from the opener returns every now and then. Towards the end of the album more Krautrock influence becomes obvious. Apart from the few narrative parts the album is purely instrumental. Sometimes the programmed rhythm sound is a bit interfering (annoying, disturbing), but the intense basic atmosphere of the album makes it worth hearing. The label on the front cover „progressive gothic psychedelic rock“ fits very well. For fans of this genre certainly an interesting album.
